The first thing to understand is that Linux or BSD distributions are independent development. They do not attempt to be free and open-source copies of any proprietary operating system you might know. Therefore, a new user needs to be open to learn a different system without the expectation that everything works the way as one is used to. Depending of the choosen operating system the learning curve can be quite steep.
